Below is given an intimate sketch of Mrs. Ellen Perry, one of the best known women in this community, written by a personal friend, the Rev. C.E. Nichols. Rev. Nichols is pastor of the "Country Christian Churches" and has written a number of interesting stories of Shelby county people. This is the first to appear in the Herald. "Grandma" or "Aunt Ellen" Perry lives in the Berea neighborhood near Keller Switch. She was born in Kentucky, came to Missouri when 11 years of age and has lived on the home place near Keller 72 years. She is now 92 years old. She has six living children, five sons and a daughter. Two sons live with her. The daughter and the other sons all live in the neighborhood, none of them more than five or six miles away. One of the oldest sons has been out of Shelby county only one time and then only to Macon. The youngest child is 52 years and the eldest 73 years. The combined ages of the mother and the six children total 449 years, an average of 64 years. The house that "Grandma" lives in is 67 years old. The two sons at home are 69 and 73 years. A brother, living with her, "Uncle Joe" Vanderen, is 80 years. The housekeeper, Mrs. Maggie Minick, has been with them 30 years and an old family mare is 30 years old. It seems hard for anything to die in this old-fashioned home. Mrs. Perry was a charter member of the Hagers Grove Christian church and is a charter member of the Berea church. Her five sons are all members of the Berea church and all belong to the same Sunday school class. She has lived thru two wars and has voted once. She was never very strong and says she never expected to live so long. She says she has enjoyed her long life and still enjoys living and delights in her children. They come to see her often and sometimes all come at once. Her birthday is most always celebrated by a big family dinner. "Grandma" Perry is old and yet young. She can read without glasses, goes up and down stairs, gets dinner, cans fruit and is always busy at some kind of work. She likes company and talks and laughs more than anyone else. When you go to see her to "cheer her up" she turns the tables and cheers you up. She is just jolly and full of the best kind of fun. She loves children, in fact she is "just crazy about them." A granddaughter describes her as "not a bit childish and just the finest old grandmother in the world." It is a great treat to visit this dear old christian mother. She is an inspiration to anyone.
