Following a period of ill health extending over several years, Mrs. James Shea, 87 resident of Madison for nearly 30 years, died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Bornholtz, at Leeds, Iowa. Death came rather suddenly, although Mrs. Shea had suffered several sinking spells during the past few weekds brought on by a weakened heart due to her advanced age. Mrs. Shea was born Ellen Enright, June 28, 1854, in Rutledge, Vt., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Enright and a member of a family of eight children. When still a small child she moved with her parents to Warren, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. She then went to Tama, Iowa., where she was married to James Shea. Mr. and Mrs. Shea lived in Iowa a number of years, moving from Tama to Carroll. In the fall of 1913 they came to Madison, Mr. Shea having retired from active farming about that time. They purchased a residence on Second St. N.W. which has been the family home ever since. Mr. Shea died in September, 1928, and his wife continued to make her home here with her daughter, Ella, until about five years ago when she went to Leeds, Iowa., to live with Mrs. Bornholtz. She had been in frail health for the past 12 or 15 years and was a patient sufferer. Her health was further impaired by a fall 10 years ago which resulted in a hip fracture and from which she never fully recovered. Mr. and Mrs. Shea were the parents of eight children, three sons and five daughers, all of whom survive. They are: Miss Ella Shea, Madison; Mrs. John Hart, Junius (S.D.), Mrs. Will Bornholtz, Leeds, Iowa.; Mrs. Mary Sweeney, Sheldon, Iowa.; Miss Loretto Shea, Springdale, Mont.; John, Riverside, Calif.; Dennis, Los Angeles, Calif.; Arthur, Glendive, Mont. She also leaves 20 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. John Hagerty, and one brother, Dennis Enright, both of Tama, Iowa. She was a life-long member of the Catholic church and during her residence here she belonged to St. Thomas Altar society. Funeral arrangements have not been full completed pending word from distant relatives but plans are being made to bring the body back to Madison for burial beside Mrs. Shea's husband in the local Catholic cemetery. The Madison Daily Leader, August 29, 1941 - Final Rites Saturday for Mrs. James Shea. Funeral mass for Mrs. James Shea will be held at the Catholic church in Leeds, Iowa., at 9 a.m. Saturday. the body will then be brought to Madison and taken directly to the local Catholic cemetery for burial beside the grave of her husband. Buried committal rites will be held at the grave about 2 p.m. with burial under direction of the Campbell funeral home. Members of the John Hart family of Junius and Miss Ella Shea, a daughter of Madison will attend the funeral in Leeds. Mrs. Shea died early yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Bornholtz, in Leeds, where she had lived for the past five years. Graveside rites were held at the local Catholic cemetery at 2 p.m. Saturday for Mrs. James Shea, 87, long-time Madison resident who died last Thursday morning in Leeds, Iowa., where she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. William Bornholtz, for the past five years. Immediately following a requiem high mass said in her memory in the Leeds Catholic church at 8 a.m., the body was brought here for burial in the Campbell funeral coach. Commital services were conducted by Rev. Father John Mulvany. Pallbearers, all grandsons and grandsons-in-law of Mrs. Shea, included Leo DeMars, Pochohontas, Iowa.; Alan Fitzgerald, and Charles Hart, both of Yankton (South Dakota); Clifford Richardson, Hinton, Iowa.; Wayne and Dennis Bornholtz, both of Leeds, Iowa.
