Read More	Obituary in The Times and Democrat, Orangeburg, SC, 11 May 2010: Charlotte, N.C. - Ellen Josephine "Jo Ellen" Livingston Thompson, of Charlotte, N.C., beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully at her Charlotte home on May 8, 2010. Jo Ellen was born Sept. 27, 1937, as the fourth child to Clinton Martin Livingston and Gladys Caroline Felkel Livingston in Orangeburg County, Her early years were spent on the family farm outside of Orangeburg with her brothers and sister, where she learned life skills that remained with and guided her throughout her life. She graduated from Edisto High School in 1955, where she lettered in basketball and drove a local school bus. She married Bobby Grayson Thompson on Feb. 17, 1962, at St. George Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Shortly after their marriage, she relocated to Charlotte, where she made her home with Bob. Jo Ellen's life was filled with service and love for her family and friends as well as those she barely knew. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and enjoyed crafts and other homemaking arts. She canned her own vegetables for many years and served many who were in need through countless casseroles, desserts, "fried chicken" and other specialties. Jo Ellen enjoyed working with the youth in Sunday school and church primary, sharing her love and testimony of the Lord. She taught with kindness and example how a disciple of Christ should act. She also served in her church as the local women's "Relief Society" president, helping women and their families through charitable acts and instruction. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Charlotte for more than 45 years. Jo Ellen will best be remembered as a devoted wife and mother. Her first priority was always the care and welfare of her husband and children. Her easy going demeanor and contentment, her quick smile and playful nature, her constant care and support, and most especially her unconditional love, made life with her joyful and secure. Her family's sadness in bereavement is only alleviated by our hope in Christ and belief that we will be reunited with her in the eternities. Jo Ellen is survived by her eternal companion, Bobby G. Thompson; their children, Derek G. Thompson and wife, Stephanie, of Matthews, N.C., Caroline E. Thompson Beutler and husband, David, of Monroe. N.C., Jennifer E. Thompson Nixon and husband, Jason, of Gastonia. N.C.; and nine grandchildren, Laura C. Thompson, Julia E. Thompson, Courtney E. Stone, Jared G. Thompson, Grayson P. Beutler, Emily C. Thompson, Carter R. Thompson, Lenea M. Beutler and Brandon M. Nixon. Jo Ellen is survived by her beloved sister, Jean Livingston Jernigan of Orangeburg; and her three brothers, James L. Livingston of Midwest City, Okla., Frederick M. Livingston of Orangeburg and Vance M. Livingston of Atlanta, along with many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to the doctors and medical professionals at Sanger Clinic and Carolinas Medical Center that helped to extend Jo Ellen's life with a heart transplant in 1999. The family is most especially grateful to the heart donor's family, whose courageous, unselfish organ donation made it possible for our family to have her with us for an additional decade of quality life. The family also extends gratitude to all the caretakers and medical professionals, including Hospice of Charlotte that lovingly attended Jo Ellen in her final months of mortality. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged directly to the American Heart Association or Hospice of Charlotte. Viewing was held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 10, at Heritage Funeral Home's Weddington Chapel. A service celebrating the life of Jo Ellen was held at noon Tuesday May 11, at the Matthews Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Thompson Road. Interment followed at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Weddington. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104.
