Mr. Brown passed away on Thursday morning, Sept. 23, 1982 approximately the same time funeral service for his wife, Ellen, who died on Tuesday, was being held at the Methodist Church, with pastor, the Rev. Donald Jones, officiating at the service. Fred Brown was born Jan. 4, 1893 at Tingley, Iowa. He attended school in the Tingley area and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines. He and Ellen Nelson were united in marriage on August 12, 1922, at Ringsted. He taught school before his marriage and served as superintendent of schools at Grant Consolidated, Superior, Royal, and Gruver. He began farming southwest of Seneca in 1928, retiring in 1956 and the couple moved to Mason City, spending their winters in Arizona. They moved to the Friendship Haven Care Center, where they have lived the past seven years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Special music at the funeral service was provided by Mrs. Arnold Hanson, organist, who accompanied the soloist, his son-in-law, Al Hewitt, as he sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Casket bearers were former Seneca neighbors, Victor Stuecker, Harold Eimers, Paul Voigt, Ted Jensen, Kenneth Halverson and Fred Greinert, who also served at the funeral of Mrs. Brown. Interment was in the Methodist Cemetery, Fenton. Survivors include one son, Eldon of Rural Fenton; a daughter, Margery, Mrs. Al Hewitt, of St. Cloud, Minnesota; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Harry Brown of Leslie, Arkansas and Clyde Brown of Afton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, who died Sept. 21, 1982 at the age of 92 at Friendship Haven. Ellen, daughter of Anton and Anna Nelson, was born in Seneca Township of Kossuth County, Iowa on Nov. 8, 1889. She attended school in Seneca and Humboldt College, then taught school at Lone Rock, Wesley, Seneca and Grand Consolidated. She was married to Fred H. Brown at Ringsted Aug. 12, 1922. Her survivors include a son Eldon of Fenton, daughter Margery, Mrs. Al Hewitt, of St. Cloud, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a brother Albin Nelson, a resident at Valley Vue Rest Home in Armstrong.
