Bellwood, Oct. 2 – Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Cady, long-time Bellwood resident, who passed away Monday morning, Sept. 29, at her Bellwood home after a long illness due to her advanced age, were held Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 1, at 2:30 o'clock in the Baptist church. Rev. B. F. Eberhart, pastor of the Methodist church, was assisted in the service by Rev. W. J. Boling, pastor of the Baptist church in David City. The singers were Mrs. J. D. Suddarth, Mrs. Clarence Smith, Talbot Hosher and H. A. Taylor. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery, south of Bellwood. This deserving tribute was paid Mrs. Cady by Rev. Eberhart: "She was primarily a home maker; she was neighborly, motherly and kind spirited, having a good word for even the erring. Patient in suffering, she appreciated all done for her by neighbors and friends, who were many. She was very religious and lived a practical religious life; in short, she was one of the good old-fashioned kind of folks." Martin Van Buren Cady, husband of Mrs. Cady, passed on in January, 1911, but she is survived by three children, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one brother. The children are Fred C. Cady of David City, George M. Cady of Bellwood and Mrs. Mina E. Huston of Wessington Springs, S. Dak. One of the grandchildren is Miss Oma L. Cady, county superintendent of schools in Butler county. The brother, John W. McDonald, of Wichita, Kas., is the only remaining one of a family, of seven children. Ellen McDonald was Mrs. Cady's maiden name. She was born January 1, 1840, is Oswego, N. Y., and at the age of 14 years her parents to Branch county, Mich., where three years later on December 31, 1857, she was married to Mr. Cady. They were among the earliest settlers of Butler county, coming here in March, 1869. They took homestead land in Section 26, Alexis township, four miles west and one mile south of where Bellwood was later located. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cady were charter members of and assisted in organizing the Baptist church in Bellwood. Mr. and Mrs. Cady lived on their homestead land 33 years, moving to Columbus in September, 1902. Five years later they returned to Bellwood, which was Mrs. Cady's home until her death. Mrs. Cady's three children were with her in her last illness and were in attendance at the funeral and burial.
