During the first two years and a half of her illness she was bed-ridden at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Regan, and then was removed to St. Mary’s hospital for treatment. Never, during all those years, was there a word of complaint uttered by the saintly mother because of her misfortune. Her fortitude was an inspiration to all who knew her, as was her constant cheerfulness. The Sisters who cared for her at the hospital were her devoted servants, and she was “Grandmother Keating” to all of them. In fact, her sweet character and motherly spirit approached the ideal and won her place in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to make her acquaintance. “Never once,” said one of the daughters this afternoon, “did the children come home from school and not find mother there waiting for them. Social life and social duties had no appeal for her. Her family and her home were her life, and she always enjoyed the young folks who came for a visit.” As Ellen Sullivan, Mrs. Keating was born Aug. 5, 1844, at Harvard, Ill. Her parents were John and Margaret Sullivan. Her girlhood until the time of her marriage to Thomas Keating, Nov. 8, 1861, was spent in Harvard. After her marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Keating, with her brother, Will Sullivan, and his wife, came to Platte county and took up adjoining farms five miles west of Columbus. The Keatings remained on the farm, now known as the Sheldon place, for five years and then moved to Columbus, where Mr. Keating was engaged in the produce business. Following Mr. Keating’s death, Sept. 29, 1911, Mrs. Keating made her home with her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Regan, until her condition required hospital attention 16 months ago and she was removed to St. Mary’s hospital. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Keating, three of whom preceded her in death. Surviving children are: Thomas Keating, Fremont; Mrs. Margaret Flynn, Lincoln; Mrs. W. F. Winkleman and John Keating, Denver; Mrs. H. R. Bannister, Cleveland; Mrs. G. A. Young, Omaha; Mrs. John Locher, Monticello, Ia.; Henry Keating, San Antonio, Tex., and Mrs. R. C. Regan, Columbus. A granddaughter, Miss Mae Keating, of Kansas City, who was raised in the family as one of her own daughters, also survives, together with 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She leaves two brothers, William Sullivan, of Albion, and Judge J. J. Sullivan, of Omaha, and a sister, Mrs. J. J. Shields, of Harvard, Ill. Most of the children are expected here for the funeral, which is to be held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from St. Bonaventure’s church, with Father Charles officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery, the body to rest beside that of her husband. Father Charles officiating. The body was laid to rest beside that of her deceased husband in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were: Sam Gass, jr., William Ragatz, William O’Brien, Frank Gerharz, J. C. Byrnes and William Shea. A large number of relatives and friends from a distance were here for the services. Among them were: John Keating and daughter, Jewel, of Denver; Mrs. W. F. Winkleman, Denver; Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Jeffers, Omaha; J. F. Cox, Lincoln; Thomas Keating and son, John, and Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Keating, of Fremont; Mrs. H. C. McKelvie and Mrs. M. J. Flynn, Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Brown, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Henry, Schuyler; William Sullivan, Albion; Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan and Dan Sullivan, Albion; Al Sullivan, Primrose; Hans Jepson, Albion; Mr. and Mrs. John J. Locher and little daughter, Monticello, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Young and son, Richard, Omaha.
