Mrs. Ellen Redkey died at her home in Rainsboro, May 22, 1896, of paralysis, after a brief illness of about 31 hours, aged 69 year, 3 months and 18 days. She was a daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Taylor, born Feb. 4, 1827, near Rainsboro, and has always lived in this vicinity, where every worthy enterprise and every charitable and benevolent cause met with her hearty approval and were benefitted by her willing mind and helping hand. She was married to Anthony Redkey, Nov. 29, 1849, and, for a period of 37 years faithfully walked by his side, meeting the duties of life as a companion, wife and mother, until Aug. 29, 1887, when he was suddenly removed by death. Since that time she has been journeying amid the shadows and loneliness of widowhood, not in a disconsolate and complaining mood, but with a resignation, courage and cheerfulness inspired and prompted by a faith in him who hath promised to care for the fatherless and the widow. In early life she joined the M. E. Church at Rainsboro, and has ever since been identified with all its interests. The last Sabbath of her life found her in her place in the Sunday, School, and in the public services that followed, which was in perfect keeping with the habit of her life. She gave unstintedly of her means for the support of the gospel and the various benevolences of the Church. Her hospitality towards her different pastors and their families, and towards her brothers and sisters in the Church was always generous and free. But her generosity was not limited to church circles or circumscribed by denominational lines. The needs of humanity in their broadest sense claimed her attention and felt the influence of her loving words and helping hands. We who have been so favored with her pure life and noble example will soon look upon her form and features for the last time on earth. Her body will be removed ,from our midst and tenderly laid in the silent tomb. But, the influence of her life will linger here and live in your hearts and mine, and in the church where she was so devoted and bore such faithful testimony, and in the Sunday School, where she taught and received instructions, in the social circles where her cheerfulness was so manifest, and in the chambers of the sick where her kind deeds and words of cheer brought sunshine and gladness. In precept and example she has left a rich legacy to many, and especially to these two sorrowing daughters, who in her death have sustained an irreparable loss. But, in their sorrow and sad bereavement they may, and doubtless do, turn their thoughts to a better world and a brighter home where father and mother have met, after eight year separation, to part no more, and where they, too, if faithful, may join them in the sweet bye and-bye, and live with them forever. The high esteem in which she was held was shown by the multitude that attended the funeral services at her home on Sunday morning by Rev's J. B. Ruggles and J. I. Taggart and the large number who accompanied the remains to Hillsboro, where they were laid to rest. The immediate family that survive consists of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Brown and Miss Delia Redkey.
