The following is the obituary as it appeared in the local newspaper. ______________________________________________________ 4 January 1932 , Tallahassee, Florida State Hospital Father of Ten Is Attacked By Negro With Axe Without Warning ----------------------------------------------------------- A tragic incident occurred here Monday, taking the life of the father of ten children. Ellis Crowson, 57, detail worker at the State Hospital was brutally murdered with an axe by a Negro patient who suddenly went insane. Mr. Crowson had several patients at work buiding a fence on the farm. One of the Negroes was using the handle of an axe to tamp the dirt around posts and when Mr. Crowson leaned over the fence to fasten the wire wth a staple, the Negro hit him across the head with the butt of the axe and then hit again as the man fell. The Negro took flight immediately and was not apprehended until dark. The accident occurred about 1:45 p.m., a few minutes after the noon meal. Just at dark, the Negro came in from the woods and gave himself up, acting as though he knew he had done wrong, but apparently unsuspecting of the havoc he had wrought. No cause for the vicious attack could be learned as the patient had been a model patient for several years. Seven years ago, he had made a similar attack on Henry Rooks that almost proved fatal, but had not done anything out of the ordinary since. Crowson was carried to the hospital at once, but never regained consciousness in the few minutes he lived. His head was badly smashed, one blow having struck in the back and another to the front. The body was prepared for burial at the Hospital morgue and the funeral was arranged for Wednesday afternoon. Rev. C. J. Wattenburgery was to conduct the funeral service. Mr. Crowson was fifty-seven years of age and was born and reared in Donalsonville, GA, later moving to Cypress where he married and lived for many years. He lost his first wife by whom he had had five children, four of whom are living. He later married again, marrying a widow with four children. The family moved to Chattahoochee seven years ago and Mr. Crowson had worked for the State Hospital since that time until his tragic end. By his second marriage, he had two children. Mr. Crowson, while though a man of limited means, provided for his family on a small salary and maintained good credit and the respect of those with whom he did business. He was well known for his honesty and straightforwardness and has many friends to regret his passing. He was a member of the Baptist church at Cypress. He is survived by his grief stricken wife; four grown children, Henry Crowson, Ellis Crowson, Jr., Mrs. O. J. Johnson of Panama City, and Mrs. Jim Merchant, of Cross City; three stepdaughters, Theresa, Mildred, Myrtle; one stepson, Ronal; and the two sons, Cecil and Calvin. Interment was at the Cypress Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon
