L. Stamm Takes His Life This Morning By Cut- ting His Throat. - - - - This morning, the sad intelligence was brought to town that Mr. E. L. Stamm, who recently bought and moved upon the Gibbs place three miles south- east of town, had taken his life. We made our way to the place as soon as possible and obtained the following facts: He arose about 6 o’clock this morning, built a fire in the kitchen and called his daughter up to get breakfast, and his son to do the chores. He was then heard going into the woodshed just south of the house, about fifteen feet, out nothing further was seen until his daughter had breakfast ready, when they called him and receiving no an- swer and thinking he had gone out into the field some distance, the boy got a horn and blew it. As this summons failed to bring him, they commenced to look for him, and in a short time found him lying in the woodshed, with his head close to the door on the north side, and a ghastly gash in his throat. He was entirely dead when found. The gash was on the right side of his neck, extending from near his right ear across his throat, severing his larynx and the jugular vein. His death must have been instantaneous. The implement used was a common jack knife, which was found by his side with the large blade open. Mr. Stamm had but recently returned from California, and it seems from the evidence before the coroner’s jury that he had been in ill health for some time, and for over a week had been acting strangely. His wife testified that he had several times talked of putting an end to himself. The cause assigned for the act is that his bad health had affect- ed his mind, and he has been very gloomy ever since he bought the Gibbs property. He seemed to think he had undertaken too much, and was not satis- fied with his location. The inquest was presided over by Coroner Chatburn, as- sisted by Dr. Bayer, W.W. Girton, F. M. Nance, N.W. Babcock and others, and will be concluded this afternoon at four o’clock, when the verdict will be announced. Altogether it is a sad affair, for Mr. Stamm was a man well liked by all who knew him; perfectly honorable and up- right, and loved and respected by his family. His financial affairs are report- ed to be in a fair condition, and he cer- tainly must have been deranged when he committed the act which summoned him so speedily before his maker. He leaves a wife, and daughter about eighteen years old, and a son about fif- teen, and has one married daughter, Mrs. J. W. Jones, who lives in Lincoln Township. The time for the funeral has been set for Saturday afternoon, at one o’clock, from the Bowman Grove Church. To the bereaved family, no mere words can give relief, but they have the sym- pathy of all in this hour of trial and af- fliction. - - - - - - - - - - 1880 United States Federal Census Name: E. L.
