"Ellis Ransom Zeller was born March 24, 1887 in the West Union neighborhood, near Sargent. He grew up on a farm there and learned the carpentering and cabinet-making trade. He was married to Ruth Metcalf on May 14, 1907 and two children were born to this union: Max and Marian. Mrs. Zeller died in 1911. On December 27, 1913, he was united in marriage to Gladys Amsberry. Nine children were born to this union, eight of whom are still living. Mr. Zeller spent his entire life, except for two years in the Navy during World War One, in Custer County. He resided in Broken Bow and vicinity the majority of his life. He was active in the American Legion, serving as post commander and service officer. He was made an honorary admiral in the Nebraska Navy for special service in the American Legion and community. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Elks and the Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Gladys; 10 children, Max Metcalf, Gardner, Oregon, Mrs. Marian Harmon, Keystone, Zellis Zeller, Des Moines, Mrs. Zetta Miller, Kearney, Mrs. Nadia Lansden, Hastings, Raymond Zeller, Alameda, California (a member of the U.S. Navy), Robert Zeller, Broken Bow, Mrs. Joana Root, Lincoln, Denny Zeller and Donna Zeller, Broken Bow; a brother, Victor Zeller, Bakersfield, California; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Holly, Ansley, and Mrs. Hazel Smotherman, Bakersfield, California; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also many other relatives and friends. Services were held at the Schneringer-Johnson Funeral Home."
