MENGEL Long Time Resident of Valparaiso Postmaster Fifteen Years The ranks of pioneer residents of Valparaiso were reduced by one last Friday when death summoned Ellis V. Mengel, after an illness of several weeks. While his condition was known to be serious and his death was not unexpected, yet his passing caused a shadow to fall upon the community for he and his family had played an important part in the various affairs of Valparaiso and he will be sorely missed by his host of friends in this community. Mr. Mengel was born at Loami, Illinois, December 19, 1846. He grew to manhood there and came to Nebraska with his father who took a homestead in Oak Creek precinct. Mr. Mengel, himself, was engaged in farming for a number of years and later conducted a hardware and furniture store in Valparaiso. He was for some time, connected with the mail service and was in charge of the run from Omaha to Stromsburg. Later on, he was appointed as local postmaster and gave faithful service for fifteen years. The last few years of his life were spent in retirement because of the condition of his health. He spent the last 40 years of his life in the same home in Valparaiso. Funeral services were conducted from the local Methodist church Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Laurence Nye in charge. The large attendance at the service was an eloquent tribute to the regard with which the Valparaiso community held Mr. Mengel and his family. A quartet, Mrs. Petermichel, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Edwards and Earl Worshem, with Mrs. Mosgrove playing the accompaniment sang several selections. The local Odd Fellows lodge, of which Mr. Mengel was a member and a Past Noble Grand, were in charge of the service and the lodge ritual was conducted at the church because of the cold weather. Brothers George Kunkler and Louis Carlson led the Odd Fellows in this portion of the service. Interment was made in the family plot at the Valparaiso cemetery and a long procession followed the body to attend the last rites at its final resting place.
