Read More	Mount Pleasant (IA) News Front page 27 November 1962 Accident Fatal To Couple Ellsworth Scarffs Victims In Car-Truck Collision A well known Mt. Pleasant couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth R. Scarff were killed instantly in a car-truck collision two miles south of Prescott, Kans., at 3 p.m. Monday, while on the way home from visiting their son and family in Garland, Tex. Mr. Scarff, who owned the Scarff Egg Market here, was 58, and Mrs. Scarff, 59. They left here the first part of last week and spent Thanksgiving with their son, John W. Scarff, his wife, and their children, Jimmy, Billy and Cindy, at Garfield, which is near Dallas. They left Garfield for Mt. Pleasant early Monday. News dispatches said that the Scarff car swerved to the right and then back to the left into the path of the truck. The truck driver, whose identity hasn't been learned here, suffered cuts, bruises and shock and is in a Fort Scott, Kan. hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Scarff, both badly cut and battered by the impact, died at the scene. --------------- Ellsworth Raymond Scarff, who was widely known as "Popcorn", was born in Henry county, Feb. 11, 1904, the son of James and Martha Scarff. Surviving besides the son in Texas is one brother, Willard Scarff of Mt. Pleasant and five sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Lampe of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. George Meints of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Homer Reid of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Ruben Cronin of Galesburg, Ill. and Mrs. Roy Garrels of Danville. His parents, and a sister, Gladys, preceded him in death. Ruth Marie Scarff was born Dec. 13, 1902, at Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of John and Mary Christian Cronin. Surviving her besides the son is one brother, Ruben Cronin of Galesburg, Ill. and three sisters, Mrs. Harold Greer of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Floyd Musel of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Robert Heston of Burlington. One sister, Mrs. Mary Alice Humphrey, preceded her in death in October 1961. The bodies were taken to Torneden Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Kans., after the accident and are being returned here by Crane Funeral Home hearse which is expected to arrive here late Tuesday night. K. Crane Funeral Home, Friday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m. Many relatives and friends attended. Dr. Alvin T. Mayberry officiated at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Ben Galer, organist, played "Ave Maria", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Lord's Prayer". Bearers for Ellsworth R. Scarff were Keeth McCabe, Orval Edwards, Dale Davison, LeRoy Mertens, Ronald Roth and Clarence Farman. Bearers for Ruth M. Scarff were Thomas McCabe, Ralph Mertens, James McCabe, Max Beavers, John Morrow and Francis Scott. Burial was in Forest Home cemetery with Rev. John Manning, pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic church, presiding for Ruth Scarff and Dr. Maberry for Ellsworth Scarff. Rosary was recited for Mrs. Scarff at the Funeral Home Thursday evening with the Rev. John Manning officiating. Mr. and Mrs, Scarff were the parents of one son, John W, Scarff of Garland, Tex. They also had three grandchildren, Jimmy, Billy and Cindy. Ellsworth Raymond Scarff, widely known as "Popcorn" is survived by one brother, Willard Scarff of Mt. Pleasant, and five sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Lampe of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. George Meints of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Homer Reid of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Ruben Cronin of Galesburg, Ill., and Mrs. Roy Garrels of Danville.
