Description	:	Elmer Bittel was born in Ellis, KS on July 11, 1924, the son of Antone and Katherine (Dreiling) Bittel. He passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 in the Gove County Medical Center in Quinter at the age of 82. As a child, he attended Harmony country school and graduated from Quinter High School with the class of 1942. Elmer entered the U.S. Navy in August of 1944. Read More	Elmer Bittel was born in Ellis, KS on July 11, 1924, the son of Antone and Katherine (Dreiling) Bittel. He passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 in the Gove County Medical Center in Quinter at the age of 82. As a child, he attended Harmony country school and graduated from Quinter High School with the class of 1942. Elmer entered the U.S. Navy in August of 1944. He served on the USNTC Farragut, Idaho and the USS Shields Navy ships. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon. Elmer was honorably discharged June 8, 1946. He kept in touch with his WWII shipmates and had just attended a reunion in San Diego, CA in September of this year. After returning home from the service, Elmer worked as a real estate agent in Wichita for a few years. On April 8, 1947 Elmer married Agnes Phlieger in St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, the same church he helped construct in earlier years. Elmer and Agnes moved to Hays in 1974 and lived there eleven years before returning to the farm near Quinter in 1985. He was a farmer and a stockman. Agnes preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1994. Elmer was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer. He loved traveling and went on several cruises with his sisters. He treasured the times spent with his grandson and great-grandson. Survivors include a son, James Mark Bittel of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a grandson, Byron James Bittle and companion, Lynn Pfaff of Topeka; a great-grandson, Braylon Gage Bittel; a brother, Charles Bittel and wife Pat of Blue Springs, MO; two sisters, Cora Flora and husband Lowell, and Ruth VonLintel, all of Quinter. Preceding him in death was his wife, Agnes; a brother, Wilbur Bittel; and three sisters, Marietta Younger, Viola Michel and Bertha Schertz. Services for Elmer were held Wednesday, Nov. 8 in St. Michael Catholic Church at Collyer with Father Donald F. Pfannenstiel officiating. Internment is in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Michael Catholic Church and can be sent in care of Shmitt Funeral Home, 901 S. Main, Quinter, KS 67752. Western Kansas World, 11/9/2006
