He died Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk. ——— Elmer Carl Barrett was born March 23, 1930, to Charles and Mae (Winter) Barrett, at St. Paul. As a child, he moved to York. Elmer attended school and graduated from high school in 1951. He played football all four years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 12, 1951, going to Camp Polk, La. He was discharged on July 11, 1953. He was united in marriage to La Vern Franz on Dec. 30, 1953. To this union, six children were born. Elmer and La Vern made their home in York after being discharged. Elmer was in partnership with his father, Charles, his brother, Martin and his nephew, Danny Barrett in the Barrett Welding and Machine Shop until retiring and moving to Tilden. Elmer took flying lessons when he was in high school. He also taught swimming lessons and scuba diving lessons. Elmer loved to hunt, fish and camp with his family. Elmer was a member of the York American Legion Post for 61 years. He was also a charter member of the Eagles Club. He was one of the founders of the club. On May 25, 1996, he was united in marriage to Doris I. Nelson at Tilden Church of Christ. He attended Tilden Church of Christ for several years. Elmer is survived by his spouse, Doris of Tilden; children Kay (Ed) Gordon, Jon Barrett (friend Char) of York, Suzanna (Steve) Fergusen of Lincoln, Stan (Cindy) Barrett of Chesterfield, Va., Max (Sherry) Barrett of Quinton, Va., and Becky Gray; a stepdaughter, Susan (Douglas) McIntosh of Tilden; a brother, Robert (Betty) Barrett of Lilburn, Ga.; several grandchildren; a great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; three sisters; a stepdaughter; grandson; and a great-grandson.
