He married his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Muriel Mehitable Hooper, on Christmas Eve in 1930. He had strong independent nature he preferred to work for himself for most of his life. He provided for his wife and three children as a self-taught lobsterman, fisherman, carpenter, and boat-builder.
