Elmer was born, Feb. 14, 1932, in the Huntley Project area to Jacob and Mildred Kautz. Elmer enlisted in the U.S.A.F. and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Kautz, 79, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at St. Vincent's Hospital after a long struggle with health problems. Elmer was born, Feb. 14, 1932, in the Huntley Project area to Jacob and Mildred Kautz. Elmer enlisted in the U.S.A.F. and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was stationed at Ukota Airbase in Tokyo, Japan. After being honorably discharged from the U.S.A.F., Elmer returned to Huntley Project and farmed for a brief period. Elmer worked several jobs to support his family until getting hired by a Billings oil refinery. From 1958 to 1994, he worked at Continental Oil Refinery which eventually became Conoco-Phillips Oil Refinery. In 1982 Elmer moved back to the Huntley Project area and was involved in farming until his passing. Elmer was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Moose Lodge. Elmer's No. 1 love was his family. On Dec. 12, 1954, he married Phyllis Propp. They had two sons, Rodney and Robert. Elmer is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Worden, Mont.; son Rodney Kautz and his wife Pamela along with his children, Casey and Taylor of Meridian, Idaho; son Robert Kautz along with his son, Karson of Boise, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, and brother James Kautz. Elmer will be missed for his quick wit and one-liners which always brought laughter to those around him. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Contributor: Waggykat (48407627)
