Veteran followers of sports in South Bend and vicinity received with regret the news that Elmer Moffitt, former star pitcher of the old South Bend Central League team, had died at the age of 66. His death occurred late Sunday night in Holy Family hospital, La Port, after a two week illness. The funeral service were set for 4 o'clock this afternoon in the Olive Chapel Church, with burial to take place in the church cemetery. His 90-year-old mother died in her home South Bend home today. Moffitt got his start in professional ball with the South Bend Central League team in 1903 when Aggie Grant, who now resides on Tonti avenue was the Green Stockings' manager. Moffitt was a Central League star for the next four years under Manager Grant, and in his final year here had Ed Smith, now superintendent of city school buildings and grounds, as his manager. At the end of 1906 season, Moffitt was sold by South Bend to the Toronto team of the Intentional League, and a couple of years later pitched one of the most remarkable games ever recorded in minor league history. Pitching against the Syracuse team, Moffitt was hit for a single on the first ball he pitched to the first Syracuse batman in the first inning. From then on, until Toronto finally won the game 1-0, in the 14th inning, not a Syracuse batsman reached first base. Moffitt retired 42 consecutive Syracuse hitters without issuing a pass or hitting a man, and not one error was made by his supporting cast. Soon after that , his arm gave out and eventually retired from professional ball. From the South Bend Tribune on 6-5-44 Elmer E. Moffitt, 66, of New Carlisle, this county, a St. Joseph highway supervisor, died at 9:05 p.m. Sunday in Fairview hospital, LaPorte, Ind., after a two-week illness. He was born in Wills Twp., LaPorte County, and had spent his life in the New Carlisle vicinity. In 1899 he married Clara Hooton in Wills Twp. Surviving are his widow; his mother, Mrs. Savannah Moffitt, South Bend; seven sons, Eston H. and William D. Moffitt of New Carlisle; Randall, Galien, Mich.; George, Crow Point, Ind.; Master Sergt. Gene G. Moffitt, in Italy; Staff Sergt. Robert Moffitt in India, and Sergt. Richard Moffitt, Boston, Mass.; Five daughters, Mrs. Thelma Riley, Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Mrs.Lois Rogers and Mrs. Mary Struyf, South Bend; Mrs. Carol Fox, Walkerton, and Mrs. Helen Wykoff, New Carlisle; three bothers, Russell, South Bend; Floyd, Gary, Ind. And Bruce, Detroit Lake, Minn. And a sister, Mrs. Clyde Rodgers, Mishawaka. Mr. Moffitt was amember of the Maccabee lodge. Burial will be in Olive Chapel Cemetery.
