He had been in frail health for some time but critically ill for only a few days. Mr. O'Farrell was only three weeks old when his family came across the prairie in August, 1861, to Lower Gar Lake, only four years after the massacre. He had lived most of his life within the confines of his father's homestead within sight of the Gardner log cabin. Elmer O'Farrell and his mother, Mrs. John O'Farrell, and other members of their family, lived in the stockade at Spirit Lake during the summer of 1862 when the Indians were again on the prowl. Mr. O'Farrell traveled to their home, then on the Little Sioux river west of Milford, daily. Elmer was one of the two babies that spent that summer within the stockade. When the family decided to move back to the lakes after living on the river for a time, the father chose the highest hill on the prairie south of Arnolds Park not very far from the Lower Gar Lake shore where the family had spent its first winter in a log cabin. The O'Farrell home was a stagecoach stop, postoffice, and a neighborhood grocery of those days. The elder O'Farrell went to Fort Dodge twice a year to lay in supplies for six months and he occasionally sold supplies to needy settlers. Their home was the half-way house in the lake region and often sheltered travelers. Mr. O'Farrell knew many of the hardships of the early settlers. A few years ago he recalled some of the conditions of his youth and said that in 1880, the winter of the deep snow, he recalled that snow was at times too deep for travel of any kind. Some roads were blocked with 10-foot snow drifts and were packed so hard at times that teams traveled over it without regards to roads. He also recalled many severe blizzards of his youth. The O'Farrell's lived through the grasshopper siege, too, even though many families did give up and returned east. Mr. O'Farrell remembered that the grasshopper's descended upon fields and did not destroy natural vegetation to any extent. Mr. O'Farrell was a boy of about 15 when the grasshoppers came, and recalled in later years that the pests were finally killed by an evolution of nature. Tiny insects resembling minute red spiders, attacked the grasshoppers and killed them so they piled up in low places and along rows in the fields. He also helped his father with the "hopperdoser" of pioneer fame, a device that held kerosene in which that held cups of kerosene in which they caught the bugs. In those days, the O'Farrell boys often rounded up elk with the cattle at evening, and once they had a pet elk. There were nine children in the O'Farrell family. Only Will O'Farrell of Marvin, S. D., now survive. He spends part of each year here visiting a daughter, Mrs. Orville Donaldson. An oddity of the frontier was that he is the second "Willie" in the family of children. A brother, Willie, was killed in a coasting accident and when a new baby was born, the children asked that he be called Willie, too. That Willie is the only one living of the family. Mr. O'Farrell was married to Miss Mae Henderson Dec. 22, 1887, in one of the Frontier weddings long to be recalled by the members of the family and the settlement. They had been school friends and the Hendersons had came about the time the O'Farrells arrived at the lakes. The couple had a quiet celebration of their 57th wedding anniversary last Dec. 22, by a dinner at the home of their daughter, Mrs. J. E. Titterington, in Milford. The Henderson-O'Farrell wedding took place in Spirit Lake. The preacher was the Rev. Samuel Pillsbury who lived in the Gardner log cabin for many years and for whom the West Okoboji lake point was named. Theirs was the last wedding rite he performed. The young couple drove in an open sleigh to Spirit Lake, accompanied by the late A. E. Carlton and Will O'Farrell. Their wedding trip was a ride to Estherville and back to Spirit Lake on the train and it was hours late. Housekeeping was next to impossible until they made room in the O'Farrell homestead. Later the young O'Farrells moved to a small house across the road, then to a farm at the south. They spent a year in Louisiana during the land boom and returned to the home acres. Some years ago they purchased part of the original homestead, across the road toward the lake, and remained there. There are two children in the family, Mrs. J. E. Titterington (Nellie), and John O'Farrell, both of Milford. The funeral services were held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the Friends Church in Arnolds Park. Rev. J. O.
