Richard Snow will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Military rites will be by American Legion Post 75 and Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard. Mr. Unkel died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Norfolk Veterans Home. --- Elmer was born on Sept. 2, 1923, on a farm near Battle Creek, the son of Emil and Sophia (Hofmann) Unkel. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Battle Creek High School. Elmer entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 28, 1944, and served with the 96th Infantry in the Pacific Theater. He was wounded on Okinawa and received the Purple Heart. Elmer earned his honorable discharge on March 22, 1947. Following the war, Elmer returned to the farm. He moved into Battle Creek in 1986. In 2001, Elmer moved to Community Pride where he resided before moving to the Norfolk Veterans Home several years ago. Elmer was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek where he was baptized and confirmed. He was very active in the parish where he served as the parish treasurer for many years, a trustee, two terms as elder, head usher and greeter. He was also a member of the parish choir. Elmer also served on the board of directors for the former Lutheran Hospital for nearly 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. Elmer is survived by his brother and spouse, Lawrence and Avalon Unkel of Battle Creek; and one sister and her spouse, Delores and Richard Magwire of Norfolk; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
