| Description | : | Elmer Goedken saw combat during WWII with the U.S. Army 42nd Infantry (“Rainbow”) Division. On April 29, 1945, The 42nd Infantry Division liberated the Dachau concentration camp northwest of Munich, and its nearby subcamps,. At Dachau were almost 70,000 prisoners, nearly 50 open boxcars filled with about 2,300 corpses of prisoners evacuated from Buchenwald to be cremated at Dachau, and piles of unburied corpses throughout the camp. Elmer brought back many pictures he took during the liberation. |
