Description	:	Elmer (E.J.) McKinley, 88, of Cheyenne died March 25 at Life Care Center of Cheyenne. Elmer was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Tie Siding. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Upon his discharge he returned to Nebraska and worked as a ranch foreman in the Sandhills for various ranches, including the Avery Ranch, the King Ranch and the Rush Creek Land and Cattle Company during the 1940s and '50s. McKinley, 88, of Cheyenne died March 25 at Life Care Center of Cheyenne. Elmer was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Tie Siding. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Upon his discharge he returned to Nebraska and worked as a ranch foreman in the Sandhills for various ranches, including the Avery Ranch, the King Ranch and the Rush Creek Land and Cattle Company during the 1940s and '50s. He married Helen Hennig on Aug. 19, 1949. To this union two children, Melanie and Monte, were born. Elmer hired out with the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher/train order operator in 1958, working in both Sidney, Neb., and Cheyenne. He retired in 1984 after 27 years of service. Elmer and his family resided in Sidney from 1960 to 1972. In Sidney, Elmer served his community by coaching little and minor league baseball, as well as girls softball. He was a sponsor for the Sidney High School Band and a Den Leader for the Cub and Boy Scouts of America. In 1972 the family moved to Cheyenne, where he and Helen resided until his retirement. In 1991 they moved to Torrington, where they lived until Helen's death in 2002. He moved back to Cheyenne after her death to be near his children and grandchildren. Elmer loved bird hunting and fishing and shared this passion with his son and several neighborhood boys. He was an avid Husker football fan ... Go Big Red! Elmer is survived by his daughter, Melanie Hughes; his son, Monte McKinley and Sherri Moore, all of Cheyenne; four grandchildren, Farah Borton and husband, Brandon of Douglas, Chris Hughes, of Portland, Ore., Megan Hughes, of Laramie, Kaley Ferguson, of Central City, Neb.; and Sherri's daughter, Tiffani Stetson, of Denver. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Brennen, Aspen and Destrie of Douglas. His parents, George and Carolyn McKinley; his wife, Helen; four brothers; and one sister preceded Elmer in death.
