Elmer Stockdale was born April 6, 1915, at Parkersburg, Iowa, the son of Elmer Guy and Bessie (Roberts) Stockdale. In 1920 the family moved to Iowa Falls, and Elmer attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1933. At the age of 15 Elmer was sponsored in the Junior Olympics by the Waterloo Courier, going to Atlantic City, New Jersey where he won his division in Track and Field. Elmer attended Ellsworth Junior College, Iowa Falls, graduating in 1935. He sold insurance in Iowa Falls where he joined the Iowa Falls Lions Club. On May 28, 1935, Elmer was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Corson. In 1942 he started farming, living on various rented farms. In 1948 the family moved to the Lee Center Community. In the 1950s, Elmer introduced anhydrous ammonia to the area, running plants in Bradford, Hampton, and Sinclair, Iowa. In 1958 Elmer started in the Grain Bin business and was Stormor's largest distributor in the nation for several years. This business then became the Stockdale's Corporation. Elmer was a 52 year member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church. He served on the Ellsworth College Board of Trustee's from 1958 until 1994. He and Foster Mason co-chaired the fundraising drive at Ellsworth which contributed to the building of the Gentle Student Center and the Reggie Johnson Classroom Building. Elmer is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gwen Stockdale, two sons, two daughters,14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ida Tordoff of Iowa Falls.
