He was a member to the Sigourney Lions Club, a board member of the Sigourney Community Schools, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Keokuk County Health Center, Charirman of the Keokuk County Cancer Society, and a member of various banking committees. He was married to Juanita Henson in Nashua on October 26, 1929. Mrs. Mertz died December 5, 1971. Survivors are his daughter and her husband, Mariann and Charles Sigafoose; one grandson, Jay Sigafoose; a brother, C. J. Mertz and a sister, Eloise Jacobs. Preceding him in death were a brother, LeRoy Mertz and a sister Clarrissia Lyons.
