Ruter was born on Thursday; December 30, 1926 near Wellsburg; Grundy County, Iowa. Elmer was the son of Herman E. and Etta (Stoehr) Ruter. Elmer received his education in Wellsburg, and graduated from high school there in 1944. After graduation Elmer began work at Beving Plumbing and Heating. On Thursday; March 14, 1946, Elmer entered the United States Army, serving his country until Friday; April 11, 1947, when he was honorably discharged. On Tuesday; August 19, 1947, Elmer was united in marriage to Irene L. Knock at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Elmer and Irene lived in Wellsburg after their marriage until 1952 when they moved onto their farm. Elmer farmed actively until they moved back to Wellsburg in 1990. He enjoyed farming and continued to help out on the farm after retirement. Elmer was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and had formerly served as a Deacon and on the Church Consistory. Elmer had also been on the Wellsburg City Council for many years and also served on the Wellsburg School Board for eight years. He had been a former member of the Community Club and the Wellsburg Betterment Group. Elmer was an avid golfer, and member of the hearing aid club. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Elmer J. Ruter, age 78, of Wellsburg, Iowa passed away on Thursday; June 30, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo; Black Hawk County, Iowa. Those left to mourn his passing are: His wife: Irene of Wellsburg, Iowa. Two daughters: Debra & her husband: Terry Aalfs of Wellsburg, Iowa. Diane "Deester" & her husband: Curt Petersen of Saint Louis; Saint Louis County, Missouri and one son: Howard Ruter of West Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa. Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One brother: Eugene & his wife: Thelma Ruter of Wellsburg and one sister: Erma & her husband: Duane Meyer of Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be on Sunday; July 3, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will also be on Monday morning; July 4, 2005 at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The family will be present on Sunday evening to greet friends. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p. m. on Monday; July 4, 2005, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Interment will follow at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery with military rites provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American Legion Post No. 213.
