A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at Prince of Peace Parish. The Rev. Joseph Nguyen will officiate. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Doug and Dennis McDaniel, Jeff and Terry Ullrich, Karl Schmitz and Rodney Schmidt. Elmer was born in Clinton on June 15, 1918, the son of John Ullrich and Lena Manning Ullrich. He married Marjorie Clark-Ketelsen on September 4, 1945, in Clinton. Marjorie passed away on October 26, 2008. Elmer was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, Farm Bureau, Pork Producers, Andover Volunteer Fire Department, Izaak Walton League and American Legion Post 190. He farmed most all of his life. He along with his wife, Marge, owned and operated the Mar-Mer Acres feeder pig business until 1982. He continued to farm his land until he was 84 years of age, retiring in 2002. Elmer loved the land, the outdoors and all living things. He was actively involved in caring for the earth and its creatures and was a great observer of both Mother Nature and human nature. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February 1942 to October 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his participation in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He took the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in April 2010. Elmer entertained many with his stories of his early childhood, the war and of farming life. He was a person who loved life and the world he lived in and the people that shared it with him. He often said that he felt he had lived in the best of times having lived his early years without running water or electricity and farmed by hand or with a team of horses and then watched the world move into this modern age of great technological advancements. Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Betheny (Gary) McDaniel of Clinton; stepson, Gary (Joyce) Ketelsen of Davenport; two grandsons, Doug (Andrea) McDaniel of Marshalltown, Dennis (Cari) McDaniel of Norwalk, Iowa; one great-grandson, Bergen and two great-granddaughters Meriden and Sydney of Marshalltown; two stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Charles of Clinton and Donald of San Jose, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, parents, sister, Geraldine Wilson, and two brothers, LeRoy and Vernon Ullrich.
