Description	:	Memorial service for E. Leon Schaefer, 87, of Norfolk will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Monday, July 16, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk with Rev. Myron Meyer officiating the service. The inurnment will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk following the service. Leon passed away on Tuesday July 10, 2018 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Leon Schaefer was born on July 16, 1930 in rural Osmond, Nebraska on the family farm to Elmer and Sylvia (Wostrel) Schaefer. He was baptized on August 31, 1930 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Pierce County. He was then confirmed on May 21, 1944 at American Lutheran Church in Plainview. Leon was raised on the family farm and attended District 32 School thru the 8th grade. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1947, upon graduation he then served in the United States Air Force. Leon married Joann (Jo) McDaniel on December 27, 1951 at the Madison Courthouse. He enjoyed mechanics and flying. He could take apart and fix about anything. He farmed until 1955 and moved to Norfolk in the fall of that year. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 of Norfolk and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk. He was a past member of the Men’s Chorus. He worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for 49 years, as Inspector and Project Manager for 14 years and Quality Assurance Manager and Lab Supervisor for 35 years. After retirement from the Department of Roads he worked for Nebraska Concrete and Aggregate Association on certification committee for 13 years based out of Lincoln, Nebraska. In his later years Leon also moved cars from town to town for Cornhusker Auto. He was a gentle man with endless patience and a wonderful example of how we all should live life. Heaven is blessed with his presence. Leon is survived by his wife Joann (Jo) of over 66 years of marriage and four children and spouses. Sidney (Susan) Schaefer of Waverly, NE, Granddaughter Kaitlyn (Christian) Gall of Sneads Ferry, N.C., grandson Nicholas of Raleigh, N.C., and Aaron Schaefer of Waverly, NE., Daughter Connie (Terry) Viterna and great-granddaughter Paige Viterna of Verdigre, NE., grandson Brandon (Jody) Viterna and great-granddaughter Brynlee of Plainview, NE., granddaughter Crystal Viterna and great-grandson Aaron of Norfolk, Son Guy Schaefer of Gretna, NE., Grandchildren Brisco, Benjamin, and Isabelle of Gretna, Son Christopher (Claudia) Schaefer and grandson David of Temecula, CA. Brothers John and Larry (Judy) Schaefer of Plainview, Sister Karen (Paul) Schulte of Stanton, brother-in-law Neil McDaniel of St. Peters, MO. and Maryanne McDaniel of O’Fallon, MO., brother-in-law Robert (Arnetta) McDaniel of Norfolk, and many cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Sylvia and one sister Lavonne Hale.
