Read More	Elmer Ramsey one of the saddest events we have ever had occasion to chronicle is that of the tragic death of Elmer Ramsey which occurred in the Union Pacific switch yards at Omaha about two o'clock last Sunday afternoon. The news reached here shortly after the accident by telephone and his brothers Grafton, Walter and Harry at once started for the scene of the accident to comfort his family and bring the remains home for burial. Just how the accident occurred will never be known as no one saw him meet his fate. The tragic story just as near as we could find out was as follows. He has been employed as a switchman in the railroad yards in Omaha for nearly two years and just before the accident he was standing on his engine which was waiting for an incoming train of thirty-three cars to pass and according to his engineer's story Elmer was counting the cars as they moved slowly past and had counted twenty-five after which the engineer missed him and in a moment or so heard a scream, and on looking out saw Elmer under the moving cars with his head and shoulders on the opposite side of the track under the twenty-eighth car. He at once whistled for the moving train to stop which it did almost instantly, but when they reached him he merely gasped once or twice for breath and died. One wheel of a truck of an empty car had passed over him in the region of the abdomen and he was wedged in between the two wheels of the truck, requiring the use of jacks to release him. One leg and both arms being broken and a bad bruise on the forehead was evidence that he had been in tight quarters and probably unconscious before the wheel crushed him. Just how he got under the moving cars will remain a mystery and no plausible theory can be advanced as he was said to be one of their most careful men. The body was taken to an undertaking establishment where his brothers identified it on their arrival at Omaha Monday afternoon. The witnesses had all been sworn and the testimony for an inquest all taken down before they arrived so the remains was turned over to them at once. Grafton and Walter returned to Auburn that night over the M. P. and Harry with the corpse, grief stricken wife and son came over the Burlington via Pacific Junction, all arriving here Tuesday morning. Elmer O. Ramsey was born May 3, 1885 on the old home place two and a half miles north and west of Johnson, and died February 3, 1907, aged 21 years and 9 months. He was the youngest of a family of twelve children and leaves a wife and son, mother, and five brothers and five sisters to mourn his untimely death, all of which were present at the funeral which was conducted by Rev. Keiser at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. Elmer was good hearted and possessed a sunny disposition which won for him friends everywhere he went and his sad death was a blow to this entire vicinity where he has lived all his life until he went to Omaha. He was married to Miss Laura Cope a few years ago and has one child, a bright little boy of four years. The sad death and the popularity of his family brought out one of the largest crowds that ever attended a funeral in Johnson. Six of his chums and close friends, Earl Waggoner, Lester and Edgar Bright, Joe Murphy, John Pohlman and Ed Ernst were the pall bearers, who gently lowered their young comrade to his last resting place in the Johnson cemetery by the side of a sister who crossed over the river of death seventeen years ago. The heartbroken wife mother and brothers and sisters have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
