Elmer O. Kinsey Died at His Home In Madrid June 17th. The Madrid Register-News gives the following account of the death of Elmer O. Kinsey, a prominent business man of that place. For many years he was a resident of Lucas county, where many of the relatives reside at present. His was a pioneer ancestry and he inherited that honest and sturdy character, which peopled this midland country. E. O. Kinsey, for many years one of the most prominent businessmen and citizens of Madrid, died Tuesday, June 17, at 3:30 o’clock, following an illness of a number of years. His condition for some time had been such that his death was expected almost daily. Four years ago he was stricken with paralysis. The stroke partly disabled him and hopes of recovery were clouded with other strokes occurring practically one year apart since. Around the first of the year he became entirely helpless, although his faculties were unimpaired. About three weeks ago he sustained a final attack and from this the attending physician gave no hope of improvement. Elmer O. Kinsey was born in Falls City, Nebraska, November 3, 1963, a son of Isaac and Rachel Kinsey, and was 66 years, 9 months and 14 days of age. His mother passed away when he was but eight years of age, and his father moved to southern Iowa, locating in Lucas county, near Chariton, on a farm. There Mr. Kinsey grew to early manhood, attending the public schools of the community. Mr. Kinsey was united in marriage on May 23, 1899, to Miss Margaret Graves, who survives him. To this union were born six children, Charles E. Kinsey, Madrid; Mrs. Alma R. Williams, of Woodward; Robert G. Kinsey, of Los Angeles, California; Paul B. Kinsey, Webster City; Mrs. Minnie M. Langland and Eldon O. Kinsey, both of Madrid. The death of the husband and father was the first break in this family circle of eight. Mr. Kinsey is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sara Cain and Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, both of Chariton, and eight grandchildren, Kenilworth Kinsey, Yvonne, Margaret and Billie Williams, Robert Kinsey, Frank Kinsey, Olaf and Raymond Langland. All of the members of the family were with him when he passed away with the exception of one son, Robert, who was at his bedside for some time prior to two weeks before his death, and was compelled to return to California by business affairs. Mr. Kinsey was baptized and became a member of the Church of Christ at the age of 20 and through the years of his activities continued a bible teacher and Sunday school superintendent. He served for a number of years as superintendent of the Sunday school in the church in Madrid and was one of the organizers and teachers of the Men’s Bible class of the same school. The class developed a membership of almost 100 under his leadership, by far the largest enrollment the organization has ever enjoyed. His personality was kindly, genial, obliging, neighborly. He made friends readily and retained them. There are hundreds who felt the impulse of his kindly influence and who in his passing, although now several years have passed since the period of their comradeship, feel a sense of personal loss. The attacks which incapacitated him physically left him mentally alert and keenly conscious of the fact that his condition was serious. Facing the future and the inevitable bravely, he made a heroic fight for life. Surrounded with loving care, every comfort provided him, he gradually grew worse. Able to communicate his thoughts with extreme difficulty, he evidently reached the conclusion several weeks ago that the boon he struggled for was to be denied him, for he then signified his willingness to go and his preparation. Drifting from day to day during recent weeks the sands of life slowly ran out. Tuesday the end came. The funeral of Mr. Kinsey was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family home at Madrid and at 2:30 from the Christian church. The service was in charge of Dr. Clarence Defur, the pastor.
