Scheer was born to George and Martha (Boje) Scheer in a wood and tarpaper two room house on his father's homestead near Colome, South Dakota. He was the middle child in a family of nine children,: Etta, Gerhart, Edgar, Mildred, Elmer, Martin, Eleanor, Dorothy and Earl As a young boy, he moved with his family to the Bazile Mills, Winnetoon, Nebraska area in 1919. They lived on a farm. Elmer attended rural school and parochial school in Bazile Mills, graduating from the eighth grade at a rural Knox County school. He was baptized at a rural church in South Dakota and confirmed at Bazile Mills. His mother passed away at a young age and Elmer's father cared for the family with the help of the older children. As a young man, Elmer regularly attended the barn dances and house parties that were the popular entertainment at that time. His first car was a Model B Ford and later he drove a Ford Club Coupe. He was married to Erma Nelson on April 24, 1940 at Bazile Mills. They rented the farm east of Creighton, where Elmer had worked for many years and later purchased the farm. They were the parents of three children, Phil, Lois and Dale. Elmer loved farming, horses, cattle, hogs, John Deer machinery and Ford machinery, fishing, hunting, ball games and visiting with family and friends. He was a hardworking man, who cared about nature and the land. Later in his life, he enjoyed reading, television, radio and audiotapes. He was an avid reader of daily and weekly newspapers. He moved to Bruce Park Terrace in June of 2001 and entered the Good Samaritan Center in Bloomfield in December. He passed away April 6, 2002 at Lundberg Memorial Hospital in Creighton as the age of 89. He is survived by his wife, Erma; two sons, Phil of Creighton and Dale and his wife, Dee, of Lincoln; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Koenig of Scottsbluff and Dorothy Stuckey of Gering; a brother, Earl and his wife, Beverly, of Ainsworth; sister-in-law, Mary Scheer, of Ainsworth and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Lois, two sisters, Etta Jensen and Mildred Scheer, who died in infancy and three brothers, Gerhart, Edgar and Martin.
