Description	:	Elmer Spieker was the fourth child of nine children born to John and Lena Schultz Spiker. His parents were born in Germany and came to the United States as teenagers. Read More	Elmer Spieker was the fourth child of nine children born to John and Lena Schultz Spiker. His parents were born in Germany and came to the United States as teenagers. Elmer was born May 10, 1883, south of Cumberland and grew up on the farm. As a young man he learned the carpenter trade under the Latimers. On December 26, 1906, he and Sadie Wilson were married at the home of her mother near Cumberland. Sadie was the daughter of David and Lucy Lanphere Wilson and was born in Audobon County, December 28, 1885. She was the oldest of five children and grew up in the area south of Cumberland. Her father died when she was thirteen years old, then she worked outside the home, doing housework and sewing to help her mother and children financially. Elmer and Sadie started farming south of Cumberland, and in 1912, they moved to Victoria Township, where they purchased a 160-acre farm. Many improvements were made on the farm by putting his carpenter's skill to good use: first a double corncrib and in 1917, a two-story modern house. Machine sheds, a hog house, a truck shed and barn were built later. The house featured a 32-volt D.C. electric lights, and a water tank furnished water for the bathroom and kitchen. Farm power that started with a team of mules was gradually changed to mechanical means, which included steam traction, Waterloo Boy tractor, Hart Parr and Oliver tractors. Elmer joined with Grover Maeder and August Dodge in buying steam engine and Case grain separator from Gerlock in 1914. They threshed grain for farmers in a four-mile area, and alter Elmer became sole owner of this equipment. He also had a corn sheller and did custom work for a wide area south of Massena, receiving 4 cents per bushel for shelling corn. Elmer also had a series of trucks and hauled livestock to markets as far away as Omaha. He had a shop where he made repairs on his farm machinery, always striving to make his equipment more modern and efficient. He readily accepted modern machinery and was glad to replace the horses with tractors. Elmer and Sadie worked hard on the farm, raising cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, and milking cows. Cream and eggs were taken to Massena and sold, and groceries bought. They attended church regularly at the Massena Christian Church. They were the parents of five children: Glen of Massena; Wilma, who passed away at 18 months; twins, Ira of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Ida Mehlmann of Massena; and Glee Helvie of Mount Etna. In 1943 they moved to Atlantic, where Elmer worked at the carpenter trade with Walter Peterman for 10 years. Elmer was a resident of Cass County all of his life, and he and Sadie were residents of Victoria Township for 32 years. He passed away on November 18, 1970 and Sadie on September 3, 1971. Both are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Cumberland, Iowa.
