Elmer Peter, son of Joseph and Josephine (Brincks) Berger, was born October 12, 1930, in Carroll County. He attended school in Coon Rapids where he lived with his family. Elmer was a plumber for over 40 years. He and his brother Edwin owned and operated Berger Brothers Plumbing and Heating, and after Edwin's death, Elmer started Elmer's Pump Service in Coon Rapids. During the Korean Conflict, from 1952 to 1954, Elmer served in the United States Army as a radio operator. At the time of his honorable discharge, he had attained the rank of Corporal. Elmer loved to garden and raise flowers in his spare time. He also raised donkeys and miniature horses. Oldtime polkas and waltzes were his favorite music, and at one time Elmer even played accordion in a band. Elmer suffered from emphysema and his health declined over the last few years. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll on Tuesday, April 5, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 24 days. Preceding Elmer in death are his parents; brothers Edwin and Melvin Berger (in infancy); sister Delores Berger (in infancy); and sister-in-law Helen Berger. He is survived by his sister Mary Ann and husband Bill Compton of Coon Rapids; six nieces and a nephew: Debbie Hansen of Algona; Susan Trecker of Coon Rapids; Mary Jo Auten of Dexter; Tricia Brandt of Manning, Cathie Blanchard of Bondurant, Mary Langel of Manning; and Kevin Berger of Bayard; special friends Mike Klocke and his family of Coon Rapids and Tom Simmons of Coon Rapids; great-nieces and nephews
