Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, was born in Nemaha county (sic), Nebr., August 19, 1891, and died August 8, 1914, aged 22 years, 11 months and 20 days. He came to Nuckolls county (sic) with his parents in 1903, and resided with them until his death. Two years ago he spent several months at Lincoln attending school. Elmer was an exemplary young man, clean in all his habits, kind to his parents and loved and respected by all who new (sic) him. He joined the M.E. church (sic) at the age of sixteen and remained a consistent member until taken away. A father, mother and sister, also a host of friends are left to mourn his untimely departure. The funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday, August 9th, by Rev. Priestley of Nora, and Rev. Knauer of Nelson, and the remains were laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery (sic). A precious from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. ========== Killed By An Explosion. The most deplorable accident we have ever been called on to record occurred Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock, at the Charley Smith home, five miles south-east of this city, when Elmer Smith was killed in an explosion and the body burned into an unrecognizable crisp, in the fire that followed. Early in the morning Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their daughter left for Fairmont for a visit with relatives and friends. The boy who was left at home alone had arranged to do some repair work in the work shop in his garage. He went to the home of Wm. Downing on the farm just south, to get some old cylinder rings that he intended to use in doing some welding on a broken casting for a separator. This was the last communication had with the boy by any one. Shortly after this a terrible explosion occurred which was heard as far as four miles distant from the Smith home. Luther Downing who was plowing on their place just south of the Smith home, soon noticed an unusual smoke raising at the Smith house and a little later observed that the building was on fire. He hurried to the scene and found the garage in flames. He went to the phone and gave out the news and plead for help which soon brought the neighbors to render such assistance as was in their power. Their attention was turned to the other buildings and by their efforts the fire was confined to the garage and carriage house and their contents. All the while the Smith boy had not been found, and while all hoped that it might be otherwise, the conclusion was that the body must be inside the burning building. There was nothing to do but wait until the flames had consumed the building. When this was done to the extent that a search of the embers could be made, it was revealed that the boy had given up his precious life in the fury of that monster fire with the the charred body left to tell the awful story. It is presumed that the explosion of the acetylene gas tank that had been used in the welding, killed the boy instantly. Undertaker J.W. Roby was sent for who at once went to the scene and brought the remains here, where they were prepared for burial. The funeral occurred Sunday morning from the home, and interment was made in the Nelson cemetery (sic). Elmer S.
