Gentz was born on May 28, 1917, to Herman and Pauline (Genter) Gentz in Ellendale. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in near Ellendale in Elden Township. He farmed with his father and brother and was active in 4-H. He married Ekla Peldo in 1940 in Aberdeen. She died in 1991. He married Bernice Watkins in February 1995 in Las Vegas. He retired from farming in 1997, and in October 2001 they moved into Ellendale. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife of Ellendale; two stepsons, Victor Watkins and Chester Watkins, both of Norman, Okla.; three stepdaughters, Elaine Watkins of Yucaipa, Calif., and Cindy (Brent) Nell and Susan (Randy) Merkel, both of Ellendale; three sisters, Gladys Haberman of Aurora, Minn., Doris Haberman of Portland, Ore., and Dorothy Olson of Ellendale; eight stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and two brothers. Casketbearers will be Darryl Tank, Darryn Tank, Perry Dewald, Calvin Dathe, Warren Wedell and Keith Haberman. Memorials may be made to the Ashley Medical Center Hospice Program, 612 Center Ave. N., Ashley, N.D. 58413."
