The Muscatine Journal July 31, 1913 page 10 HORSE'S KICK FATAL TO WEST LIBERTY BOY Elmer Buckley, Aged 15, Succumbs To Injury Was Kicked in Stomach Yesterday Afternoon - Death Occurred at 7 O'clock This Morning West Liberty, Ia., July 31 - Elmer Buckley, the 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Buckley, succumbed this morning at the home of his parents as the result of having been kicked in the stomach by a horse yesterday afternoon. Since the end of the school term the lad has been employed on the farm of Will James in the country near here. Yesterday he was working at the George Case place assisting in the threshing. While passing behind an unbroken horse, the property of Clarence Parvin (?), young Buckley was kicked in the stomach. It was not at first believed that the boy had been seriously hurt though a physician was at once summoned. Later the lad was brought to the home of his parents and as it was seen that his condition grew rapidly worse, other medical aid was summoned and three physicians worked throughout the night in an effort to save his life. Death resulted at 7 o'clock this morning. The lad is survived by his parents and by one sister, Miss Elsie. No arrangements for the funeral have been made as yet. Young Buckley was well known to many West Liberty people, as during the school year he served a large clientele as a carrier of the Muscatine Journal. ****** The Muscatine Journal Saturday, August 2, 1913 page five The funeral of Elmer Buckley was held Friday afternoon at five o'clock from the home. On account of the absence of Rev. F. M. Dowlin, of the Presbyterian church, Rev. M. E. Reusch, of the M. E. Church conducted the service. Taking his text from the twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew, the forty-fourth verse, "Therefore be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh." Misses Elsie and Wilma Whitacre, and Mssrs. R. Tharp and H. Shipman, sang very appropriate songs. The floral offerings were beautiful. Six of Elmer's young friends were his pall-bearers, they were Dewey Gibson, Ralph Hirfman, Kenneth Hawthorn, Frank Mead, Teddie Bowman and Frank Coleman. Burial was made in Oakridge cemetery. OBITUARY Elmer William Franklin Buckley was born in Rayville, Ill., August 20, 1897. He died at the home of his parents, Thursday forenoon, July 31, 1913. His death came as the result of a fatal accident which occurred on Wednesday afternoon. Elmer came to Iowa with his parents a number of years ago, and has spent the larger period of his life at West Liberty, where as a young man of good habits and a worthy ambition to fit himself for a life of usefulness he had gained many young friends who will greatly miss him. He was a member of the Presbyterian Sunday school, a member of Mrs. Evans' class and of the Boy's club, composed of members of this class. His teacher's word concerning him is that he was always interested, always attentive, splendid in his deportment, a very faithful member of the class - and she felt that he was trying the best he knew how to be a faithful Christian, to prepare himself for this life and the life to come. He leaves behind him a good record. He was working hard during the summer vacation and looked forward with keen interest toward the days for the re-opening of school when he would continue his high school work and hoped some day to graduate from the local high school. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Buckley and by an only sister, Miss Elsie.
