A terrible accident happened about two miles or more below town last Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock in which Elmo Molo lost his life. It appears that Elmo Molo, age 18, with his brother Mark, age 14, and Jack Heitz, age 16, had gone up into the hills to shoot rabbits and other game. On the way home they stopped at the house of Matt Yudnich for a few minutes and while there Mr. Yudnich, who rarely ever handles a gun, said to Jack Heitz, "Let's see your gun." Just as he had taken the gun out of young Heitz's hands, it was discharged. The gun was a double-barrel hammerless shotgun and the charge of shot struck Elmo Molo between the knee and thigh of the left leg, opening up the large artery. The young man began to bleed very freely and Mark Molo ran for help. Soon C.J.B. Moore and others were on the scene and they carried the wounded man into Mr. Yudnich's house and Dr. H. Abrons was summoned as quickly as possible. In the meantime the wound was bandaged with towels and everything possible was done to make the young man comfortable as possible. Dr. Abrons, upon arriving at the scene of the accident, administered temporary relief and had the unfortunate lad brought to his hospital for further treatment. Dr. O'Connor of St. Helena was called in consultation and the two worked until midnight to save the young man's life, but he passed away the following night. Elmo Molo was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Molo and was aged 18 years, 7 months and 5 days, and was a native of this county. Besides his parents he is survived by a brother and sister. The accident is one of the saddest that has occurred in this community in years and the heartfelt sympathy of all go out to the bereaved ones. Coroner W.S. Brownlee held an inquest Tuesday and the jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the facts as above set forth, and exonerated Mr. Yudnich from all blame, but he is grief-stricken over the terrible mishap. The funeral was held yesterday from the Catholic Church, Rev. Father Blake of St. Helena officiating, and the services were largely attended. Interment was made in the Calistoga cemetery.
