Elmo was raised near East Enterprise and attended school there. He was inducted into the United States Army on February 1, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving in the 3015th Quartermaster Bakery Company. Read More	Let Us Pause… To Honor The Memory of Mr. Elmo Rayls Mr. Elmo Rayls entered this life on March 23, 1923, near East Enterprise, Indiana, the son of Alvah & Mabel Slack Rayls, both of whom preceded him in death. Elmo was raised near East Enterprise and attended school there. He was inducted into the United States Army on February 1, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving in the 3015th Quartermaster Bakery Company. He served in the Northern France & Rhineland Campaigns, he was honorably discharged on November 14, 1945, at Fort Meade, Maryland. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon & the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Lock on July 14, 1945, in Madison, Indiana, to this union arrived three sons & a daughter to bless their home. Elmo farmed for forty three years on his farm near Center Square, Indiana. He also had been employed at the Jefferson Proving Grounds in Madison and had helped to build the Bartholomew County Airport in Columbus, Indiana. Earlier in life he had worked at the old Bladen's General Store in Vevay. Elmo was a member of the Center Square Baptist Church near Center Square, Indiana. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, refinishing antiques & gardening. Elmo was a devoted husband, father & grandfather, upon the failing health of his beloved wife, he cared for her at their home until her death. Elmo had been in ill health for several years but had developed cancer and had spent the last five weeks at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. Elmo passed from this life on Thursday, October 28, 2004, at 8:00 am at the hospital. Elmo will be lovingly remembered by his loving daughter: Marilyn Reed & her husband: George of Bennington, IN; his loving sons: Larry Rayls & his wife: Lake of Center Square, IN; Gary Rayls & his wife: Judy of Moorefield, IN; Denny Rayls & his wife: Suzanne of Center Square, IN; his sisters: Ellogene Scudder of East Enterprise, IN; Alice Winters of Cincinnati, OH; his loving grandchildren: Brian Rayls, Angie Althoff, Tracey Azbell, Christene Estepp, Karrie Rayls, Bob Reed, Lela Young, & Kayla Day; his loving ten great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews & other relatives. Elmo was also preceded in death by his beloved wife: Betty Jean Lock Rayls on August 10, 2002; his brothers: Denver, Alvin, Norman & Kirby Rayls; his sisters: Mary Jane McKinney & Helen Rayls. Elmo will be remembered in a funeral ceremony conducted on Saturday, October 30, 2004, at 11:00 am slow time at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, with Rev. Gary Shepherd of the Center Square Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Vevay Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Vevay American Legion & VFW, with Mr. Mike Hoffman on Bagpipes playing Amazing Grace. Friends may call Friday from 5-8 pm slow time at the funeral home. Memorial are requested to the Huntington's Disease Research or American Cancer Society or Donor's Favorite Charity.
