Description	:	Elmore W. French, 92, died Aug. 7, 2009, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born in Augusta on Sept. 27, 1916, the son of Dora (Lane) French. Elmore was a wonderfully kind man and father and was an upstanding member of his community. He retired from the Air National Guard as a major after more than 33 years of service, serving in World War II and the Korean War. French, 92, died Aug. 7, 2009, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born in Augusta on Sept. 27, 1916, the son of Dora (Lane) French. Elmore was a wonderfully kind man and father and was an upstanding member of his community. He retired from the Air National Guard as a major after more than 33 years of service, serving in World War II and the Korean War. In 1946, he established a furniture restoration business known as E.W. French Upholstery and Refinishing. It is here he served the Augusta community for more than 60 years until he retired and his daughter, Kelsie L. French, took over and continues to run the family business. Aside from his many talents, Elmore was an exceptional athlete, beginning in high school playing football and baseball. Later, he also played on the Augusta Lumberjacks team as a shortstop. His love of sports never ended; he became a member at Natanis Golf Course and playing golf all over the state of Maine well into his 80s. Elmore was predeceased by his wife, Mildred M. French; her sister, Sylvia Marson; his brother, Harold French; his half-sister, Marianne Moody; and his friend/employee for more than 50 years, Norman Payson. Elmore leaves behind three children, Kelsie L. French and her husband, Michael Morrison, Jeffrey E. French and his wife, Diana, and April St. Pierre and her husband, Robert, all of Augusta; his grandchildren, Jesse and Dylan Morrison, Greg and Taylor French, Derek Sullivan, and Crystal Curtis and her husband, Chris Curtis; and his great-granddaughter, Natalie Curtis. He also leaves several close friends with special thanks to Ruth Bradley, Russell Brown, Lionel Dumont, Debbey French, Jane Wilson, and Ray Morrison, who were there often for friendship and support. He was loved very much by his friends and family and will be missed by all. Relatives and friends are invited to visit for a time of remembrance from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A private family committal service with full military honors at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta will be scheduled at a later date.
