Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the Willow Creek Church in Overly, ND. Burial will be in the Willow Creek Cemetery of rural Overly. Elna was born April 20, 1921 at Rolette, North Dakota, the daughter of Nels and Sophie Nelson. She grew up on a farm near Rolette, attended Rolette School and graduated from Rolette High School in 1938. She attended Minot State Teachers College for two years graduating with a Standard Teaching Degree in 1940. She taught in rural schools and Overly Public School for six years. Elna married John Evanger on October 27, 1946. They lived and farmed near Overly. Elna and John moved to the St. Andrews Apartments in Bottineau in 2000. John passed away July 8, 2008. Elna resided in the apartments until June 2012 when she moved to the long term section of St. Andrews Health Center. Elna was baptized, confirmed, and married at Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette, North Dakota. She became a member of Willow Creek Lutheran Church following her marriage. She was active in WELCA, Overly Homemakers, and was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Turtle Mountain Retired Teachers Association and St. Andrews Health Care Auxiliary. Elna enjoyed sewing, quilting, making crafts and loved to bake. She is especially remembered for baking cookies, buns, bread, and butter horns. Elna is survived by four daughters: Eunice (LeRoy) Throlson, Sheyenne, North Dakota; Marlys (Charles) Murphy, Worthington, Minnesota; Elsie (David) Henes, Willow City, North Dakota; Mavis(Kerry) Mikkelsen, Langdon, North Dakota; eleven grandchildren: Jessica Throlson, Joanna (Jay) Duffey, Michael (Maria) Murphy and children, Joshua and Madelyn, Brenden (Sophia) Murphy and children, Andrew, Gretchen, and Laura, Dr. Sharlene Murphy, Natalie Henes, Heidi (Matt) Burton, Kristy Henes, Lindsey (Todd) Tescher and children Chase and Lauren, Kyle (Heather) Mikkelsen and child Brayden, Evan Mikkelsen, one sister-in-law Amy Nelson, and many nieces and nephews. Elna is preceded in death by her husband John, son Lauren, sisters.
