Elna D Whalen was born July 2, 1917, in DeSmet, S.D., to Jessie and Millie (Mc Caskill) Whalen. She graduated from high school in DeSmet, then moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where she went to work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Later she was transferred to the Fremont office of Metropolitan where she was the secretary for William Eaton. She married Rex Hansen on Feb 11, 1954, in Fremont. They lived on the farm near Ames, where she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont, Beta Sigma Phi, and Arbor Vitae Chapter 92 Order of Eastern Star of Fremont. She was very involved with following the activities of her grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Grant (and wife, Cheryl) Hansen of Ames and Paul Hansen of Omaha; three grandsons, Owen, Jordan and Nathan Hansen, all of Ames. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex, on Jan 20, 1999; her parents; two sisters, Alta and Zona; and a brother, Kenneth. There is no viewing, however the family will be at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont 5-7 p.m. Friday to receive friends. The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 16th Street and Nye Avenue, with the Rev. Maetta Snyder officiating. Burial will be later at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. memorials are suggested to the North Bend Central Foundation.
