Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield with the Rev. Cathi Braasch officiating. Burial will be at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Gosper County. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand. She was born April 7, 1912, southeast of Smithfield to John and Maria (Schmickl) Wilken. On June 18, 1933, she married Albert Lavene. He died Aug. 17, 1993. Survivors include her son, Doyle of Bertrand; and daughters, Iola Louthan of Norfolk and Joyce Langenberg of Bertrand. Additional survivors include her daughter-in-law, Kay Lavene of Bertrand; son-in-law, Larry Langenberg of Bertrand; grandchildren, Jason Lavene and his wife Lisa, Justin Lavene and his wife Jill, Jeremy Lavene and his wife Lisa, Daniel Louthan, Richard Louthan, Rhonda Davison and her husband Larry, and Matthew and Michael Langenberg; great-grandchildren, Lexi and Jackson Lavene, Ava Lavene, Travis, Heidi and Maggie Louthan and Jared, Joel and Kyle Davison; great-great-grandson, Cynch Louthan; brother-in-law, Paul Lavene and his wife Dorothy, of Bertrand; sisters-in-law, Valva York of Joplin, Mo., June Lavene and Rose Wilken, both of Bertrand, and Millie Todd of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She attended Tracyville School for eight years, then attended Smithfield High School. After her education, she helped on the family farm and assisted several families with child care. She was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church. She and her husband lived south of Bertrand for two years before they moved nine miles north of Bertrand. In 1941, the family moved one mile west and 4½ miles north of Bertrand before settling on the farmstead one mile west and three-quarters of a mile north of Bertrand where they farmed for 29 years. In 1972, she and her husband moved to Bertrand. She was active in the church choir, women’s circle and quilting group. She was a substitute cook at Bertrand School during her retirement years, enjoyed assisting with sing-alongs at the Bertrand Nursing Home for several years, loved to talk on the phone, and sent greeting cards to friends and family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Robert in infancy and Marlin; granddaughter, Denise Louthan; granddaughter-in-law, Carol Louthan; brothers, Edward, John, Albert, Harry, Emil, Walter, Arndt, Elmer, Lorenz, Roy and Clarence; and sisters, Hattie (Carstens) Schooley, Tina Scheel and Hilda Ebmeier.
