Waite, 86, died in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 16, 2004. Born in Kalispell, she grew up in Eureka and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology at the University of Montana in 1940. After completing a master's in social work at Columbia University in 1942, she worked for the remainder of World War II as a high school English teacher in Corvallis and then as a social worker for the state of Montana. In 1945, she began a career with the American Red Cross as a caseworker in the Portland, Ore., chapter. She retired 38 years later as one of the American Red Cross' four national vice presidents. In the interim, she worked in hospitals in Japan and Puerto Rico, on a much-traveled disaster response team based in St. Louis and in the Red Cross' Washington, D.C., chapter. She was the second woman to serve as a national vice president. After retirement, Mrs. Waite served as a board member of Travelers Aid international. She also continued to enjoy foreign travel with many trips in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, some of them with her sister Dean Marshall, who was then a retired Hellgate High School English teacher. Mrs. Waite was married once, to Alexander T. Waite, who preceded his wife in death. They had no children. She is survived by two nephews, John Marshall in San Diego and Loren Marshall in Anchorage, Alaska; and grandnephew John Marshall in Napa, Calif. A lover of art and music, she regularly attended opera, symphony and stage productions. She was also a spirited host throughout her life, welcoming friends from around the world at parties in her Washington apartment. A memorial service will take place in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 15.
