The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 16 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, 12.5 miles North, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3:30 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Elsa Arleen Herwig Oehlrich was born October 10, 1925, at her parent’s home in rural Platte County, Nebraska, to F.W. Otto and A. H. Adeline (Hohnhorst) Herwig. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. She worked for Columbus Farm Equipment where she met Herman Oehlrich. Herman and Arleen were married on November 15, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. Arleen went to work at First National Bank until her son, John, was born. She stayed at home to watch him grow for several years and then worked as a volunteer librarian at District 10 School. She volunteered there until they hired her as the “official” librarian and secretary. She touched lives there for well over 40 years and retired from Shell Creek Elementary School at the age of 80. Through the years Arleen taught Sunday School and Bible School, helped 4-H kids on different cooking and sewing projects and canned all kinds of fruits, vegetables, meats, and preserves. She tended to and cared for her flower beds and garden and was a member of the Leaf and Petal Garden Club. Arleen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Arleen loved watching her grandson, Philip, whenever she got the opportunity. They would color Easter eggs, play with his toy trains, and drive down to the railroad tracks in town and watch the trains speed through town. They loved baking cakes or cookies for her to serve any guest who came over to visit. Philip enjoyed sitting on the armrest of her chair and being together almost every day after Arleen would come home from school. Arleen is survived by: Son – John (Julie) Oehlrich of Columbus, NE Grandson – Philip Oehlrich of Columbus, NE Arleen was preceded in death by: Husband – Herman R. T. Oehlrich Parents – Otto and Adeline Herwig Sister and Brother-in-law – Nora and Rev. W. R. Maurer Sister and Brother-in-law – Millie and Chet Peitsch
