Friend, Jr., 804 East Boone street, is very seriously ill of whooping cough and summer cholera. The most dangerous feature of the baby's case is the convulsions that have been an added complication during the past few days. From the August 28, 1909 edition of the Evening Times-Republican's The City in Brief section on page 7: The funeral of little Elsie Friend, the 15 months' old daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. David Friend, Jr., 804 East Boone street, was held from the home Friday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. W. H. Scott officiating. There was a large attendance of sympathizing friends and many beautiful flowers. Four little girls, Esther Weaver, Frances Matson, Gail Mettlen and Cecil Clark, carried the casket. Interment was in Riverside. Those in attendance from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Winterowd, of Montour; Miss Carrie Winterowd, of Des Moines; and Miss Laura Winterowd, of Waterloo.
