Elsie died Friday, July 27, 2018, at O’Neill Care and Rehabilitation Center in O’Neill. Elsie Arlene (Lauts) Johnson was born October 16, 1927. She was the first-born child of Theodore and Bessie (Prokop) Lauts. Elsie grew up on a farm northeast of Spencer, Nebraska with six siblings. She attended grade school at District #74 and attended Spencer High School. Elsie met Kenneth Johnson at a dance in Lynch, Nebraska. They married at the Rosedale Parsonage on March 5th, 1947. Four children were born to this union: Esther, Robert, Kay, and Kathy. Kenneth and Elsie farmed northwest of Lynch. She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, cooking, baking, and sewing clothes for all the family. She especially enjoyed hosting large family reunions and cooking for friends and family. Elsie started quilting in 1983, and taught quilting classes and lessons to many in the community. She has made many quilts for grandkids and great-grands. She was a member of Rosedale Covenant Church, Ladies Aid and was also a leader of the Covenant Church Youth (CCY) with Kenneth for several years. Elsie was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, the local Extension Club, the Gross Women’s Club, and served on the boards of the Boyd County Fair and the Spencer Alumni. Elsie worked at a bakery in Grand Island for a few years in the 80’s and was known as the ‘Lunch Lady’ at the Lynch and Spencer schools in the 90’s. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1990. Also preceding her death were her parents, Ted and Bessie Lauts and siblings Albert, Lucille, Gary, Theola and Kristina, as well as son-in-law, Richard Scott, granddaughter-in-law, Brenda Hammon, and great grandson Franklin Ray Love. Many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews also preceded her in death. Elsie is survived by four children and spouses, Esther (Charles) Nielsen of Niobrara, Robert Johnson of Lynch, Kay (Paul) Hammon of Grand Island and Kathy (Tom) Love who have lived many places over-seas and will soon make their home in California. She has 11 grandchildren, LeAnn, Julie, Jon, Becky, Ladina, Anna, Doug, Trevor, Kristen, Karyss, and Theo; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren with one more on the way. She is also survived by siblings, Karen (Ron) Kopecky of Missouri and Norman Lauts of Alaska and in laws Marlin Johnson, Charlotte White, Lois Johnson, and Enedina Lauts; and many nieces and nephews. Elsie and Kenneth loved children and had several who were like grandchildren to them: Brad, Bridget, Brittney and Brandon Kopecky in Spencer and Nell McDermott and her three sons, Brady, Cain, and Liam in Grand Island. Brady named his daughter after Elsie. Very special friends and helpers in Spencer were Elsie and Lily Magwire. Elsie will be fondly remembered by all her family and friends.
