Elsie was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Oelrichs, South Dakota to George W. Barton and Anna Barton. Elsie attended school in South Dakota until 1932 where their family lived before there was electricity, running water or telephones. She saw her first car at the age of eight. At age 13, her family moved to Colville, where she continued to go to school and graduated in 1939 at Colville High School. She loved going to dances at the local grange halls with her brothers, where she met John Day and fell in love. They married Feb. 12, 1941 at the Hitching Post in Coeur d' Alene Idaho. Johnny then went into the service for three years while Elsie waited for the love of her life to return. While Johnny was overseas, Elsie worked as a waitress at Old King Cole's, and then as a switch operator at the local telephone company, transferring calls. She saved all of her money, along with the money Johnny had sent home to her, to buy their first home together. When Johnny came home from WW II, she quit her job at the phone company, and they began a family together. The couple had four boys and one girl and raised the family on their farm on Spanish Prairie Road. She worked hard to raise her family, not wasting a thing. That continued throughout her life. Elsie always made large sit down meals with enough food to feed whoever might be stopping by, followed with dessert. As their children grew, Johnny and Elsie enjoyed bowling leagues, camping with members of the Good Sam's Club, dancing at the Eagles, volunteering to cook hamburgers at the fair for the VFW, and volunteering at the local museum and voter's booths. The couple took trips to Alaska and California in their motor home and loved snowmobiling, huckleberry picking and playing pinochle with whoever would play. Elsie worked at Sprouse-Reitz for many years, getting good deals on many yards of fabric. She also enjoyed oil painting, sewing, gardening and her embroidery machine, which she used to make many special blankets for all her great-grandchildren, greatgreat-grandchildren and many other special people in her life who were having babies. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, John Day; son, Elmer Day; grandson, Benji Day; son-in-law, Mike Moffat, and daughter-in-law, Beverly Day. Elsie is survived by her sister, Lyla Richardson of Addy; sister, Loretta McBreen of Portland, Oregon; son, Dick Day of Yelm; son, Leroy Day and wife Sharon of Colville; daughter, Vicki Moffatt of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; son, Gary Day and wife Maria of Kennewick; and daughterin-law Dawn Day of Colville, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held for Elsie on August 27 at noon at the Eagles Lodge, followed by a lunch. Salads and desserts are welcome to help celebrate Elsie's love of cooking and spending Saturday afternoons with family and friends.
