Elsie "Florine", "Hub" Dickerson was born on April 6th, 1922 to Virtus and Elsie (Meyerhoff) Huebner in Bushnell, SD, and raised in rural Coleman, SD. At 18 she moved to Sioux Falls for employment as a typist at the local army base during WW II. Additionally, she spent evenings as a volunteer nurse's aide. Read More	Florine "Hub" Dickerson, 91, of Sioux Falls died Monday, June 17, 2013 at Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage. Elsie "Florine", "Hub" Dickerson was born on April 6th, 1922 to Virtus and Elsie (Meyerhoff) Huebner in Bushnell, SD, and raised in rural Coleman, SD. At 18 she moved to Sioux Falls for employment as a typist at the local army base during WW II. Additionally, she spent evenings as a volunteer nurse's aide. After the war, Hub took a job at the Veteran's Administration. It was at the VA where a co-worker "set her up" on a blind date with the man who would become the love of her life, Willard Roy Dickerson. Hub and Willard were married in 1945 and were blessed with three sons, Ray, John and Lee. A tragic plane accident in 1957 took her husband, father and a sister-in-law, leaving Hub to raise her three boys on her own. She was an example to us all of a mother's deep love and devotion to her children, and the importance of nurturing healthy spirits. In a book she published in 1971 titled: " Me + 3. Hub shared her experiences through poetry, short stories, and prayers, adding the poems and thank you notes of her student youth group at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Hub expressed that this experience was the gift that God provided for her healing and the new direction her life would need to take in order to raise up her sons as a single parent. She often expressed her gratitude to God for this priceless gift that these youth gave her. She also added that this was the point in her life that her spiritual life changed forever, that God had shown her a new found way to love and depend on Him. After Willard passed away, Hub began working for Sioux Falls College in 1959. After 7½ years, she redirected her energies and entered the Ministry for Young people. Because financial responsibilities still existed, she added employment with the Social Security Office in Sioux Falls. In March 1973 she was awarded the recognition of "Civil Servant of the Year" for the federal employees of that area. Hub remained politically active well into her later years, even travelling to Washington, DC to lobby for Veteran's benefit reform. Hub was a generous spirit who knew no class distinction. Her motto was simple, if someone is in need and I can help, then I will. It was not uncommon for Hub to open her heart and home to Veteran's families who needed shelter while supporting a loved one in the hospital. Her guest books boast signatures from all over the world, many of whom have continued to communicate their gratitude and appreciation for a simple act of kindness so many years ago. Hub's mainstay for communication has always been the handwritten word. For those of us fortunate enough to have received her simple message of love, may we in kind, remember to model ourselves after Hub and pass her message on to those in our lives. Hub's quick sense of humor and unforgettable "one liners" kept all of those fortunate to be in her presence on their toes and laughing until we cried. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Roy Dickerson; her sons, John and Ray Dickerson, and a brother, Earl Huebner. Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Lee Dickerson, of Sioux Falls, SD; her brother, John Huebner (Joyce Agee) of Gilbert, AZ; her grandchildren, Andrew Dickerson of Sioux Falls, SD, Joseph Dickerson of Montana, and Grace Dickerson of Omaha, NE; her daughters-in-law, Sue Dickerson of Sioux Falls, SD and Kallen (Tim) Glidden of Omaha, NE. Funeral services will begin 10:00 am Tuesday June 25, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Monday June 24, 2013 at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location. ************************************************* "THE GATE" By Florine Dickerson (based on scripture Matt 7:13-14) Jesus left me an assignment it is written in this book. I wasn't able to meet up with Him in person, But He left me a map with directions. He has opened and shut many gates in my life. But not once did He lock the latch. In fact, He left the gate free to swing in or out. He even made a path to the gate and put a welcome sign on one entry. I call it His "free way" It is narrow, and the way is hard, this is life's highway. It is not paved. Not too attractive to some, not often very scenic. Some people hesitate to go in that direction. But with Jesus, you turn the corners just at the right speed, and hit the bumps just right; you can bounce back real well.
