Elsie (Susie) Louise Fittje was born December 10, 1912, on the family farm near Creston, Nebraska, to Sam and Martha (Streblow) Hoesly. She was baptized by Rev. Frieche at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Creston on March 23, 1913. She was confirmed on April 4, 1926, at St. Peters by Rev. Koolen. Elsie attended grade school at District 53 and graduated from Liberty High School, Madison, Nebraska. She earned her teachers certificate from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, and taught at District 21 in Platte County. On October 17, 1941, Elsie was united in marriage to Ernest A. Fittje at St. Peter’s Church by Rev. Jobman. She loved the farm and worked side by side with her husband and later with her son. She loved being on a tractor and watching the farm fields change from planting to harvest. Elsie always had a big flock of chickens and talked to the “Girls” about laying eggs. She was a wonderful cook and baker, providing many lunches and dinners to family and friends, especially during the busy time of farming. She enjoyed playing her organ, crocheting, card playing, and bowling after her retirement in 1978. Elsie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Columbus. She was a Sunday School Teacher and treasurer for the PTO. She drove to church every Sunday from Columbus until her early 90’s when her sight affected her ability. Her strong faith and love for her family will always be cherished.
