Description	:	Elsie Mason was born in Hancock, Minn, on May 27, 1904, to the late Ferry and Maude (Drury) Smith. She was christened Bernice Laverne. During a lifethreatening condition as a newborn, she was cared for by her grandmothers Elsie Smith and Mae Drury, who had traveled by train to Minnesota. As she recovered, the name Elsie Mae was bestowed upon her. After a short time in Minnesota, the family moved to a farm near Lake View. She attended country school near Lake View.
