Elsie May Harten was born on a farm one mile east of Beaver on Sept. 3, 1891. She was the youngest of 12 children born to Peter D. and Mary Bower Gray. While very young, Elsie's family moved into Beaver. She received her education in a country school mile north of town and later graduated from the Beaver school. On Feb. 17, 1909, she was united in marriage with Fred Harten. They were the parents of three sons, Alvin, Wilfred, and Wilbur. Elsie and her husband farmed in Boone county and later in Greene county. In 1961 they retired and moved into their home in Jefferson where they lived until Fred passed away. Elsie continued to live I their home until 1981 when she moved to a senior citizens' apartment in Grand Junction. In 1986 she moved to the Jefferson Manor. Elsie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grand Junction and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday school and was a pianist at the Beaver Methodist Church for many years. Mrs. Harten had made many quilts for her family and others besides various other hand work and sewing. Elsie May Harten died Jan. 4, 1991, at Jefferson Manor. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, four sisters, her husband in 1959 and her sons Wilfred in Infancy and Alvin in 1981. She is survived by her son Wilbur and his wife Aletha of Grand Junction; daughter in-law Bertha Harten of Ogden; four grandchildren, Linda Eckhart of Kansas City, MO, Laura Mount and her husband Ivan of Pilot Mound, Dennis Mac Harten of Odgen and Claudia Cargill and her husband Phil of Hazel Green, WI; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
