Read More	Cedar Rapids Daily Republican June 6, 1916 Elsie Miller Varner was born in Linn county near Robins, December 29, 1868 and grew to womanhood in the place of her nativity. She was married to L.J. Varner February 13, 1894. The first years of the married life of Mr. and Mrs. Varner were spent in Marion, where they formed many enduring friendships. In 1902, Mrs. Varner accompanied her husband to Australia. They resided at Melbourne Australia for four years, where Mr. Varner was engaged in looking after the interests of the International Harvester Co. They remained until a relapse of illness which had afflicted Mrs. Varner seemed to make a return home advisable. After a few months spent in Marion among their friends they left for Seattle, and with the exception of a short time spent in California, they remained in Seattle until the death of Mrs. Varner, at 7:30 o'clock Wednesday evening, May 17, 1916. The father and mother of Mrs. Varner have been very well known in Linn county. Her father, Jacob B. Miller, died December 1912. Her mother resided at Kenwood Park. Elsie was of a fmily of eight children, of which she was the oldest. THe other children are Anna, Mrs. F.J. Harris of Sherwood, N.D.; Mamie, Mrs. L.Q. Miller, now deceased; Walter J. Miller of Oklahoma; John A. Miller of Cedar Rapids; D.Earle Miller of Marion; George F. Miller and D. Lloyd Miller of Cedar Rapids. Before leaving Seattle for Marion, brief funeral services were held. The body was brought to the home of her mother in Kenwood, and following a brief prayer at the house the main funeral service was held from the Methodist church in Marion at 3 p.m. Wednesday May 24, conducted by Dr. A.J. Northrup. The burial was in Oak Shade cemetery. Mrs. Varner was an invalid during the whole of her mature life. Her years were spent largely in the quest for health and in the fight against the oppression and melancholy so often produced by invalidism. Her life reminds one of that of Robert Louis Stevenson both in its search for health and in its sunny and sweet optimism. Her Bible shows that she had found victory through suffering, for we read a marked passage, "It is good for me that I have been afflicted that I might learn my stature." The lives of Mr. and Mrs. Varner were peculiarly devoted to each other. Mr. Varner bent his business plans to the one task of the tender care for his wife. Mrs. Varner enjoyed an unusual grasp of religion. As a child she was gifted religiously. The marked passages in her well worn Bible, and the appreciative clippings found therein were used as the basis of her funeral service. She was for years a faithful member of the Methodist church in Marion. On settling in Seattle she transferred her membership to the Bethany Presbyterian church near her own home in Seattle where she and Mr. Varner were attendants until death called her from the church militant to the church triumphant which is without fault before the throne of God. **Wife of Lorandis J.
